This year’s Chilly Challenge was a great success due to the amazing turnout from our district groups  (Pinxton, Alfreton, Normanton, Tibshelf, Somercotes (P.A.N.T.S)), well nearly all of our group, as hopefully Somercotes will join us next year at Dunnicliffe camp site.

The energy radiating of the Cubs and Scouts when they arrived was overwhelming and they couldn’t wait to get started. The criteria for passing the Chilly Challenge and earning the badge is that the participant has to sleep for one night under canvas i.e. in a tent, during January, one of the coldest times in the U.K.

The camp took place on Saturday the 27th of January and finished the next day. During the Saturday the Cubs and Scouts first put up their tents, ready for the night ahead. After setting up, the Leaders took the two sections on a long walk (Tibshelf to Hardwick hall and back) around local area, giving the Cubs and Scouts a chance to explore and appreciate the area that we have available around us.

With everyone being thoroughly tired after the walk, everyone huddled together inside Tibshelf Scout Hut with steaming mugs of tea or hot chocolate and watched a film before heading off to sleep.

The next morning, the Cubs and Scouts awoke to the smell of breakfast, as their wonderful Leaders had gotten up early to cook for them. With everyone fed and their appetites satiated, it was simply a matter of packing up the tents and playing a couple of games before heading back home for a less bone-chilling sleep.
